PUMPKINS FOR PIGGIES

Pumpkins for Piggies’ conception came from the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council’s Organics Recycling Task Force. The event began in 2020 and consisted of two local ag producers (Hayden Fresh Farm and Mystic Hills Farmstead), feeding their animals with leftover pumpkins from the community from Halloween. This event was a shining example of how to divert waste from the landfill, feed animals, and support our local ag producers. A total of 2,000 lbs of pumpkins was diverted from the landfill. In 2021, the event partnered with Cowgirl Compost (owner change from Feed for Seed), and used both Hayden Fresh Farm and Mystic Hills Farmstead to collect pumpkins. That year, 4,880 lbs of pumpkins was diverted from the landfill. In 2022, over 3,500 lbs of pumpkins was diverted and was used as animal feed. This event continues to see success and local ag producers are grateful for the supplemental feed. This program was recently adopted by the Community Ag Alliance in 2022.
