CSA FAQs
Q: What is a Fruit/Meat Subscription?
A: Think of your fruit subscription like a CSA. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is typically a seasonal share that delivers the farm’s best each week. Each meat subscription box will be carefully curated to include a variety of cuts and products from Yampa Valley beef, pork, bison, lamb and poultry producers who are using practices that regenerate our soils and steward our lands. Because you are investing upfront, you are receiving reduced prices on responsibly raised/grown products.
Q: What is the current situation with fruit on the Western Slope?
A: In April, the Western Slope experienced a devastating frost that wiped out crops for the entire season for some farmers, including a few we source from. It is a tough hit, and one that ripples through all of us who are working to build and support a local food system. Given the warm March we had, fruit started to bud earlier, which is why the frost was so devastating. That being said, we have partner farms that were fortunate enough to still have fruit on the vine, quite literally, so we’ll lean into those connections this season. They might have more misfits to offer, or have limited availability of other crops, so we’ll all have to ride this out together. In order to mitigate this, we have reduced the amount of subscriptions available so that we can give subscribers an abundant share with the fruits you know and love.
Q: What if I don’t split groceries with anyone?
A: You’ll receive about 6lbs of fruit every other week, so it’s the perfect amount to have a steady drip for a bit, use in recipes, or indulge yourself! Don’t worry, you won’t be left with moldy fruit on the counter, it’s too good to last for long. Your meat subscription will be made up of frozen products that can be easily enjoyed in the two weeks between pickups or saved for a special occasion.
Q: What if I buy food for three or more people?
A: Consider this a jumpstart to your grocery needs. You’ll have enough fruit for snacks without stocking the fridge too full and enough meat for several meals. You can always buy multiple subscriptions, or supplement with products on the shelves of Yampa Valley Foods in between pickups.
Q: I’ve never done anything like this before. What if it doesn’t work out like I’d hope?
A: First of all, big kudos to you for breaking out of the mold! Being part of a subscription or CSA allows you to connect with your food more deeply, so you can begin to understand the bigger picture of local food systems. You’ll have opportunities to ask questions and have conversations with Yampa Valley Foods staff and producers, as well our aggregator and distributor, Meredith Rose, of Rose West. Meredith has the farmer connections on the Western Slope and is happy to share their stories and their love of fruit. If this ends up being wildly different than what you were expecting, CAA will refund you at the end of the season, no questions asked. Thank you for being part of this journey, for showing up, and for backing this system when it matters most.
